What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

By Thomas G. Goddard, JD, PhD · Updated June 2026

GEO — generative engine optimization — is the work of making a website legible and citable to AI search engines like ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, and Perplexity, so those engines name your business when a buyer asks them for one. It's the same idea as being found online, moved to where buyers now ask their questions: inside an AI's synthesized answer instead of a page of ten links.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes a page to rank in the ten blue links a search engine returns. GEO optimizes it to be named and quoted inside the single answer an AI engine writes back. The goal moves from a ranking position to a mention in the synthesized reply — a different target that needs different work. The full side-by-side is on GEO vs SEO.

What does GEO actually involve?

Three things, in order of weight. First, answer-first pages: the buyer's real question becomes the heading, and the answer is the first sentence — a clean passage an engine can lift. Second, entity authority: your business is named and described the same way across the web, so the engine can resolve who you are without guessing. Third, earned third-party mention: being referenced by other sites, which engines trust more than what you say about yourself.

Does GEO mean adding schema markup?

No — and this is where most GEO advice oversells. In a 2026 study, Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added schema against 4,000 that did not and found AI citations barely moved. Schema is hygiene: it helps engines parse your pages, but it doesn't make them cite you. It belongs in the work, set up once and correctly — but anyone selling schema as the thing that gets you named is selling the wrong thing.

Is GEO worth it — does it actually work?

It's worth doing, but no one can promise you a citation. AI visibility shifts month to month, and the engines pick only a handful of sources per answer. What GEO does is make your business legible and citable where it currently isn't — answer-first content the engine can lift, an identity it can resolve, and outside mentions that back you up. Those are the mechanisms that raise your odds of being named. Anyone who guarantees a ranking or a citation isn't being straight with you.
